Yay! I managed to bag myself a free flight in Jet.com’s 5th birthday competition. I worked out all the answers before hand, and then was ready and waiting when the competition opened at 10am on Tuesday morning. Because the site was so busy it kept throwing up errors, but I persevered and managed to successfully submit my answers at 10:22am. On Friday I was delighted to receive an email to tell me I’d won a flight. Since I was planning to go to visit Mum and Dad sometime in the next few months anyway, this means I will be able to go for free.

My sister was here last weekend, so on Saturday night we decided we’d go and see the last night of a production of ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ by Buttershaw St Paul’s Amateur Operatic Dramatic Society at St Georges Hall in Bradford. We liked the Julie Andrews film when we were younger, so looked forward to seeing the stage version. Although the storyline is basically the same, most of the music in the stage version is different to the film. It’s a bit of a shame because the film music, written by the great film score composer Elmer Bernstein is very good, and we didn’t find the stage version music quite so catchy. The singing and dancing in the production was very good. Unfortunately we didn’t have great seats, and we were at the side of the stage and we couldn’t see a subtitle screen which translated Mrs. Meers sidekicks’ lines from Chinese. The person playing the baddie Mrs. Meers, although very good, was essentially an English person playing a New Yorker pretending to be Chinese, so there were a few times we couldn’t quite catch her lines. Other than that it was an enjoyable evening, and certainly something a bit different.
